Read and Write to the Socket (i.e. Exchange Data with Server)

Even when a project promises a high internal rate of return, some organizations will have dif culty raising funds internally for the initial investment. In this case, the organization should examine options for external funding. The two options generally considered are private sector funding and government assisted funding. Private sector funding includes bank loans. Government funding may be available in some cases. It is usually worthwhile to contact the state s Department of Commerce or the federal small business administration for information regarding loans for pollution prevention or waste reduction projects. Some states can provide technical and nancial assistance as well. For example, in Ohio, the Department of Natural Resources has historically sponsored grants to private companies to reduce waste. This section provides an in-depth discussion of the contents of the deployment plan. One of the most important components of the plan is the cover sheet, which contains the of cial signatures of the executive management team indicating full approval of the deployment plan.

Once you have successfully installed iTunes, you will see a screen similar to the one shown in Figure 26 55. If you want to start up iTunes automatically, leave the box checked (again, see Figure 26 55).

In addition to the of cial approvals, the cover page should include the company name, the title of the program (such as The Solid Waste Minimization Deployment Plan ), the date the report was written, and the author or department that created the report. If the organization uses specialized tracking or identi cation numbers for projects, these should be included too.

The major problem with socket programming is that only data can be shared directly, not the functionality. The API for socket programming is rather low level and is therefore dif cult to use. Because the API is low level, socket programming is not suitable for dealing with complex data types. The connectivity code is buried in the applications and cannot be easily reused. Socket programming is not platform independent if numeric quantities are involved. This is because applications on both ends must explicitly account for the byte ordering differences (little endian versus big endian) on different platforms such as mainframe and UNIX. Tight coupling exists between the two applications because the socket connection is point to point.

This section provides the purpose, business context, and project summary in an executive summary format. It identi es the purpose of the deployment plan and its intended audience, describes the business processes that will be modi ed as a result of the deployment, and provides a summary of the plan. It also includes an overview of activities necessary to get the program launched into the business environment such as installation, con guration, and initial operational activities. It also includes details regarding the location that the assessment was conducted, the dates that it was conducted, the names of the individuals conducting the audit, and a map of the facility.

This section provides a summary of the principle ndings, recommendations, and observations. This section discusses the data collected during the assessment in terms of waste stream composition, volumes, and disposal costs. It also provides a listing of the approved alternatives for implementation.

In spite of these shortcomings, sockets are the most essential element of many other integration schemes that allow applications to share functionality in addition to data. As you will see in the next chapter, the remote procedure call (RPC) method of sharing functionality is built on top of sockets. Furthermore, distributed objects and asynchronous messages also rely on sockets. These two methods of sharing functionality are discussed in s 5 and 6.
