and is the heart and soul of PIX security There is one caveat to the algorithm described above As described, the definition is correct only for TCP- or UDP-based network connections; ICMP is handled differently In pre-42 releases, the default behavior of the PIX was to allow the following types of ICMP packets inbound: echo-reply, source-quench, unreachable, and time-exceeded These ICMP packets were used for ping, traceroute, and flow control by inside stations In version 42, this behavior was altered so that no ICMP packets were allowed inbound by default This means that even if a ping or traceroute is initiated from the inside interface, the procedure fails because the PIX blocks the inbound ICMP packets at the outside interface Each type of ICMP packet that is needed must be explicitly allowed through the outside interface We will cover this topic later in this chapter when we discuss ways to allow traffic inbound from the outside interface to the inside interface The other main function of the PIX is to perform Network Address Translation (NAT) Recall our discussion of NAT from 8 The PIX was designed to support NAT, but this functionality can be disabled if needed The PIX can also be configured to support Port Address Translation (PAT) so that only one IP address is used to translate many addresses In the latest version of the PIX IOS, the use of NAT in both directions is supported This is commonly referred to as dual NAT and is useful if there are overlapping addresses on an inside and outside network The PIX is capable of securely handling many applications In general, the only applications that do not work through the PIX are those that use changing and/or random port numbers during a TCP or UDP conversation Many multimedia applications exhibit this behavior and the PIX is specifically aware of many of the popular multimedia applications' behaviors What this means is that if an application requires that the server end of a multimedia connection opens a return connection to a multimedia client in a range of ports, the PIX will allow packets back from the server but only on the range necessary No unnecessary holes will be opened up that could be exploited by an attacker A list of the multimedia applications that the PIX is capable of handling securely is given in Table 10 2 Table 10 2: The Multimedia Applications the PIX Is Capable of Handling Securely.

Cisco offers a standard solution for this with the 1000-series LAN extenders The 1004 LAN extender will take an ISDN BRI circuit in one side and an RJ-45 connector for Ethernet connectivity in the other side If you then use a crossover RJ-45 cable, a twisted-pair Ethernet card in the PC can be connected directly to the Cisco 1004 This is shown in Fig 6-23 In fact, the configuration shown in Fig 6-23 could support an additional 22 remote PCs establishing ISDN connections simultaneously through ISDN to the one PRI connection

Again, we will look at the Data Link layer issues for both Ethernet and serial interfaces to contrast the information that similar commands present for different interface types At the Data Link layer, the protocols are concerned with forming frames and synchronizing devices prior to the exchange of data For Ethernet interfaces, we are mainly concerned about confirming that the interface has the same encapsulation as the other devices with which it must communicate We can see the encapsulation used either by examining the router configuration, or by looking at the show interface ethernet 0 command and reading the fifth line of the output There are four options for Ethernet encapsulation; other networking systems, unfortunately, know them by different names A comparison of Cisco and Novell terminology is given as follows: ARPA is known to Novell systems as the ethernet_ii frame type This is a common frame type for implementing IP on NetWare-based networks SNAP is known to Novell systems as frame type ethernet_snap The SNAP encapsulation is more common in Token-Ring environments SAP is known as ethernet_8022 and is the default frame type for NetWare 312, 4x, and later servers

Now that you have the server installed, you will first need to make sure that each user that will access the network has a network user account to log on to the network with A user account is a network object that users on the network use to prove their identity to the network Once the user logs on with a valid username and password, the user will be able to access resources on the network, such as files, folders, and printers that the user account has permission for

Before learning how to build a user account for each employee or individual that will access the network, it is important to understand that each operating system has built-in accounts A built-in account is an account that comes already installed with the operating system and serves a specific purpose There are a few built-in accounts that you should be familiar with for the Network+ exam Each of these accounts is typically used to perform the initial administrative tasks on the server, such as creating user accounts and groups Table 10-1 displays some popular built-in accounts The password for these built-in administrative accounts is normally determined during the installation of the operating system It is important to be sure that you know that password so that you can log on as that account Therefore, be sure to make note of the password during the installation and be sure to use a strong password one that is not easily guessed or cracked It is also wise to rename the default administrative accounts for security reasons
